Integrating the Arts in the Classroom

Arts in the classroom: Over 30 years ago, arts integration became a research-based curricular strategy used in classrooms. Several studies have proven its effectiveness and its pedagogical foundation.


However, if arts integration is confused with true integration, it can lead to trouble. When looking for authentic arts integration, one should look for the following: 

Foundation based on standards 

Integrating the arts in the classroom sets a standard and is a hallmark of Arts Integration. When you create a lesson or teach it, ask yourself: What standards am I addressing in the content area and the arts area? Integration of the arts is not possible if both cannot be identified. 

The arts as a means of teaching 

It seems as though the lines between content and arts are blurred when you're teaching an arts integration lesson. That's great news! As part of arts integration, students apply and connect the previously taught content through the arts. There is no connection between the arts and the content. There is an interconnection between the arts and the content areas.  

Analyzing both aspects 

When teaching arts integration lessons, the ending assessment reflects growth not only in the subject matter but also in the arts area. Is it necessary to have a master's degree in the art field to assess it? The goal is growth, not mastery in that area. The art teacher is the only one who can assess a mastery standard for an arts standard, just as the classroom teacher is the only one who can assess a mastery standard for a content standard. Growth in both areas can, however, be measured by anyone. 

What are the benefits of integrating the arts? 

An arts-integrated school that achieves remarkable results uses it with integrity. Studies have shown that integrating the arts into a school's curriculum increases student achievement by 10% or more. Creative, innovative, and meaningful learning can now be found in education. 

As an alternative, school districts should look to approaches like Arts Integration and STEAM, which have a proven track record. The reasons are as follows: 

Involvement of students 

Including the arts in the classroom makes students active participants in their learning. As a result, students are empowered to take ownership of their learning and are motivated to succeed. 

Develops the ability to think critically 

Art-integrated lessons engage students in critical thinking and help them construct meaning for their lives. By working through problem-solving and coming up with new solutions, they develop problem-solving skills. Developing these skills will build the capacity of all learners to be grittier and more perseverant. 

Educators and students empowered 

During their professional development, instructors become facilitators of creative learning and develop their skills. Providing hands-on learning for students fulfils teachers and allows them to feel fulfilled. 

Incorporating Arts into a Continuum 

A one-size-fits-all approach isn't the best way to integrate the arts. Depending on the level of income, it is available on a sliding scale. Continuum cards such as the Arts Integration Continuum Card can be used to identify where you are in the process and how you can move forward from here.

Integrating the arts into the classroom can play a key part in other academic subjects. Through art, non-art concepts and skills can be taught. Integrating art into other subjects can help students retain information and understand the material better. By integrating art into the classroom, complex concepts can also be taught in a way that is easier to comprehend. 

There are many ways in which art can be integrated. For example, you can use a painting to explain a historical concept or music to explain math concepts. Incorporating art into classrooms can be accomplished with the help of a number of resources. Furthermore, art integration organizations provide training and support for teachers.
